Negative effects of Television on Children – Important for parentsAbhishek Sharma
Technologies and media tools are very important and great asset of knowledge if used in proper manner and guidelines. These technologies like TV can be dangerous or caused negative effects on the people if wrongly used or over used. We are specially mentioning children’s in this post because children spend most time in front of TV than any teenager or adult. Yes, TV help housewives to busy their kids even I know someone who told me that my kid right now in front of TV and he/she didn’t know where is their mom. But this kind of cases are genuine and not a big deal. But do you know what your kids is watching. Kids don’t know what is right or wrong can be but parents and media know that but who care? So, Let’s understand the negative effects on Television on Children in this article:
Children are easily influenced by what they see around them which is why good parents shield their children from all kinds of bad people and negative influence rs. But even the best of parents often tend to take lightly one of the biggest influence today and the worst part is that this influence is present right inside their homes- television. Every other teenager today is propped in front of the television these days and surveys show that on an average a child spends around 3-6 hours watching television each day. What they are watching all this time and how these things are causing a change in their behaviour must be carefully supervised. Some parents find it convenient that the children are not bothering them and just sitting and watching tv all the time. They do not try to understand or monitor what their children are watching and don’t realize the negative effects of television on children.
Children try to imitate the world around them. The violence and adult content being shown is as much a part of television as soap and butter commercials. Such images, especially that of sexual nature make an impact on the tender minds of children. Their inherent nature is to imitate what they see around them and you can imagine the kind of things they see on the television. A recent survey shows that if a kid watches 3 hours of partially supervised television each day, then by the time he reaches 15 years of age, he has already seen approximately 8000 murders and an equal number of sexual assaults on screen. It becomes a part of his understanding and outlook of the world and he thinks it’s not such a uncommon things if people are killing each other or having non consensual sex. Also if they their parents are watching similar content on the television for long hours every day, then the children also see no harm in watching television all day. It becomes a regressive habit that pulls everyone in.
Sitting in one place for many hours without any activity is extremely bad for health. The lack of physical exercise and sedentary lifestyle are further made worse because the children sit for 6 hours at school and then spend the remaining time sitting in front of the television or on their smartphones. Another negative effect of watching too much television is that children’s eyes are stressed because they sit too close to the television. The televisions have gotten much bigger since I was a kid and people had to sit closer to the television back then, which wasn’t a very good idea even at that time. Today bigger television sets throw massive amounts of radiation and this can cause a lot of damage to the eyes of children. I see a lot of 10-15 year olds with thick glasses at such an early age. Upon inquiry you find out through their parents how their teen aged son or daughter spends all of his or her time after school watching television until being scolded to turn it off.
In old times people called the television an idiot box and rightly so. Youngsters today are hooked to their television and are being dumbed down by the mindless content filled with violence and sexual content. While it is true that there can be certain benefits for children if they watch the right kind of informational and useful content, it is also true that leaving them on their own with more than 100 channels to choose from is a big mistake. It is very important that children’s hours in front of the television are supervised by parents and they should be encouraged to watch things that aid in the children’s mental development and are useful for expanding knowledge. Television is a great source of knowledge but if we know where is the knowledge.
